White Oak took over from Yellow Pine as the wood flooring of choice in the mid 20th century, but was quickly surpassed by Red Oak. White Oak Flooring had its zenith of popularity in the late 19th and early 20th century during the Arts & Crafts period where white oak was used for everything from flooring to trim & paneling to furniture. A denser, slightly darker overall wood with a less prominent grain than Red Oak, White Oak is a tan to brown color with no pinks or reds. An oil-based finish will deepen and warm up the white oak’s color slightly and enhance the grain.

CLEAR GRADE (NOFMA):

Available in solid planks only, unfinished and square edged, this plain sawn grade of White Oak is simply the highest grade available. It is clear of knots, giving it the most consistent color and grain of all grades for the finest of all projects.

CLEAR GRADE RIFT & QUARTER SAWN (NOFMA):

Available in solid planks only, unfinished, this grade is entirely straight grained and free of knots, with the most uniform color available in White Oak. It will include a large percentage of planks with flecks and flashes of iridescence and is suitable for the most formal of applications – but, can complement any design. Also available in all Rift Sawn or all Quarter Sawn.

SELECT & BETTER GRADE (NOFMA):

Available in solid or engineered planks, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro bevel; this plain sawn grade of red oak flooring is virtually free of knots, with distinctly arching grain, subtle color variation and is what most of us think of when we picture wood flooring over the last 50 years. Select Grade White Oak flooring goes with anything.

SELECT & BETTER GRADE RIFT SAWN (NOFMA):

Available in solid or engineered planks, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro-bevel; this White Oak flooring grade is virtually free of knots, with primarily straight, parallel grain lines. With the growth rings from 30°- 60° to the face, there are no apparent flashes of iridescence in this grade; making it the most uniform and simple look for any formal or minimalist application.

SELECT & BETTER GRADE QUARTER SAWN (NOFMA):

Available in solid or engineered planks, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro-bevel; this grade of White Oak flooring is virtually free of knots, with primarily straight, parallel grain lines. With growth rings from 45° – 90° to the face, this grade will contain flashes of iridescence – some large and dramatic, giving it the most striking look for any formal application.

SELECT & BETTER GRADE RIFT & QUARTER SAWN (NOFMA):

Available in solid or engineered planks, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro-bevel; this grade of White Oak flooring is a mix of the above two grades and is therefore slightly less expensive than either. Virtually free of knots, with primarily straight parallel grain lines, this grade has a pleasant smattering of the iridescent flashes throughout.

#1 COMMON GRADE (NOFMA):

Available in solid or engineered planks, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro bevel; this plain sawn grade of White Oak flooring has most of the naturally occurring wood character remaining such as small tight knots, distinct color variations and varying grain patterns adding to its popular appeal.

NATURAL GRADE (NOFMA #1 & #2 Common):

Available in solid or engineered planks, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro bevel; this plain sawn grade has more of the naturally occurring wood character remaining such as knots, distinct color variations and varying grain patterns than #1 Common in order to attain the longer lengths. There may be open knots and voids that can be cut out or filled.  This option is an excellent value in White Oak flooring where character and longer plank lengths are preferred.

NATURAL GRADE RIFT & QUARTER SAWN (NOFMA #1 & #2 Common):

Available in solid or engineered planks, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro-bevel; this grade of White Oak combines the character of Natural Grade and the straight grain of Rift & Quarter Sawn to fit any design or budget. An excellent choice to get the benefits of straight grain at a reasonable price.
